Collection of printed treatises, mostly from the 1820s, printed in Mexico and consisting of political, religious, and humorous tracts. There are several about Mexico's War for Independence from the Spanish and Mexican viewpoints. There is a series attacking José Maria Tornel for actions as governor of the Federal District, 1828-1829, and a series defending José María Aguire, parish priest of Santa Vera Cruz, accused of writing the previous series, 1828. There is a theater monologue dedicated to Agustin Iturbide given on the first anniversary of Mexican Independence, 1821. Jose Maria Tornel y Mendivil was probably born on March 1, 1795 in Orizaba, Veracruz, although some sources report his birth date as 1789 or 1801. As an adult he became a Mexican Army general and politician, eventually serving as Minister of War. He allied with and helped the frequent return to power of Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna despite defeats in the 1836 Texas revolution and the 1846-48 Mexican-American War. First emperor of Mexico. Born 1783 in Valladolid (Morelia); executed July 19, 1824, in Padilla, Tamaulipas. Iturbide joined the army in 1800, by 1810 was fighting with the royalists, and by 1820 held the rank of colonel. In February 1821 he and Vicente Guerrero signed the Plan de Iguala and created the Ejército Trigarante.
